In today’s digital world, communication is changing very quickly. Many people now find it easier to talk to machines rather than to each other. From AI chatbots to social media platforms, our conversations are becoming more controlled and less risky. This video explores why this shift is happening. It will use ideas from media psychology and the work of Sherry Turkle.

Sherry Turkle argues that technology is changing how we form relationships. She famously states that we expect more from technology and less from each other. This means that people turn to machines for comfort. Machines are predictable and they do not judge. They respond immediately and consistently. In media psychology, this is often linked to emotional safety. When people talk to machines, they feel more secure. They can control what they say and how they say it. There is no fear of being misunderstood or rejected. Because of this, machines can feel easier than real human interaction.

A clear example of this can be seen in the use of AI chatbots such as ChatGPT. Many users share their personal thoughts and emotions with AI. They do this because AI does not judge them. It listens, responds quickly, and stays available at all times. At the same time, social media platforms are also changing how we communicate. On apps like TikTok and Xiaohongshu, people often express emotions through posts and videos instead of direct conversations. These forms of communication are carefully edited and controlled. Even celebrities now share their feelings through social media. They present their lives in a curated and selective way. This shows that communication is becoming more performative. It is less spontaneous and less direct than before.

There are several reasons why people prefer talking to machines. First, machines reduce social anxiety. People do not feel embarrassed when talking to AI. There is no pressure to respond perfectly. Second, machines give users a sense of control. People can start and end conversations whenever they want. They can also choose how much they share. However, this shift also creates problems. While communication becomes easier, real human relationships may become weaker. People may avoid difficult conversations in real life. They may also lose important social skills. Over time, this can make human relationships more fragile and less meaningful.

In conclusion, people prefer talking to machines because it feels safer and easier. Technology offers comfort, control, and convenience. However, this shift also reflects a deeper social issue. As we rely more on machines, we may lose the ability to deal with real human emotions. Therefore, the rise of machine communication is both a solution and a challenge for modern society.
