How Social Media Shapes Personal Identity

In this blog post, I explored how social media influences the way people present themselves online. At the beginning, I thought social media was simply a platform for communication, but I gradually realised it also plays a role in shaping identity.

Through reflection, I noticed that people often choose what to share carefully. For example, users tend to post positive moments rather than negative experiences. This selective sharing can create an idealised version of identity. I also reflected on my own behaviour and realised that I sometimes adjust my content depending on how I want to be perceived.

According to Sherry Turkle (2011), digital communication allows individuals to present curated versions of themselves, which may differ from their real-life identity. This helped me understand that identity online is often constructed rather than natural.

However, I also think social media can have positive effects. It allows people to express creativity and connect with others who share similar interests. In my experience, platforms can be useful for building confidence and sharing ideas.

Overall, this topic made me more aware of how I use social media. In the future, I will try to present a more authentic version of myself rather than focusing only on idealised content.
